Applies to the Whenly Android app (com.fluttery.whenly)

There is no Whenly server. There is no account to create and nothing to sync. Almost everything the app knows stays on your phone, and the few things that leave are listed below in full.

The short version

• A deliberately imprecise location, sent to a weather service, only when a reminder needs the forecast
• Map tiles requested while you are choosing a place on the map
• Audio, if you use dictation — handled by your device's own speech recognition, not by Whenly

Whenly contains no advertising, no analytics, no crash reporting and no tracking of any kind. Nothing is sold or shared with anyone for marketing.

What stays on your device

Whenly stores its data in a private database inside the app's own storage area, which no other app can read. That includes the text of your reminders, the places you have saved and the radius around them, your condition settings, and the record of when each reminder fired and why.

Location is matched on the device. Place reminders use Android's geofencing, which runs inside the operating system. Your position is compared against your saved places locally. Whenly does not log your movements, does not build a location history, and never transmits your precise location anywhere.

What leaves your device

1. Weather

When a reminder has a weather condition and the app needs to know the forecast, it asks Open-Meteo, a free weather API. Before asking, your coordinates are rounded to two decimal places — roughly a one-kilometre square — so the request describes an area, not a place. Results are cached for about thirty minutes so the same area is not requested repeatedly.

The request contains only that rounded coordinate. No name, account, device identifier or reminder content is attached. Open-Meteo's handling of requests is covered by its own terms and privacy statement. If a weather lookup fails, the reminder simply does not fire; nothing is retried elsewhere.

2. Map tiles

When you open the map to choose a place, the map imagery is loaded from OpenStreetMap. Like any map, this means their servers receive the area you are looking at while you are looking at it. Nothing is sent once you close the map, and the place you pick is saved only on your phone. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.

3. Dictation

If you use the microphone to speak a reminder, Whenly passes the request to the speech recognition service built into your device. Whenly does not record, store or transmit audio itself, and the resulting text is parsed on your phone.

However, what that recognition service does with the audio is outside Whenly's control and depends on your device and its settings. Many Android phones recognise speech on the device; others send the audio to their recognition provider — usually Google — to be processed. That processing is governed by your device or recognition provider's privacy policy, not this one. If you would rather no audio ever leaves your phone, do not use the microphone button: every reminder can be typed instead, and typing reaches exactly the same result.

Permissions, and why each one is asked for

ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION · ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION

To notice when you arrive at or leave a saved place. Android has required precise location for geofencing since Android 10, so this cannot be reduced to approximate location.

ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION

A place reminder is only useful if it works when the app is closed. This is what lets Android wake Whenly on a geofence crossing. Without it, only time, date and weather reminders work.

RECORD_AUDIO

Dictation only, and only while the listening screen is open. Requested the first time you tap the microphone, never at startup.

READ_CALENDAR

To tell whether you are busy or free at a given moment. Read-only, requested the first time you add a calendar condition. Event titles and details are never stored or transmitted.

POST_NOTIFICATIONS

To deliver the reminder. Notifications are created entirely on your device; there is no push service.

INTERNET

Weather lookups and map tiles, as described above. Nothing else.

RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED

To re-register your geofences and scheduled checks after the phone restarts, so reminders survive a reboot.

WAKE_LOCK

To finish checking a reminder once Android has woken the app, before the device sleeps again.

What Whenly does not do

• No account, sign-in, email address or profile
• No advertising and no advertising identifiers
• No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or usage measurement
• No selling, renting or sharing of personal data — there is none held to share
• No cloud backup or sync of your reminders
• No tracking across apps or websites

Keeping and deleting your data

Your data stays on your phone for as long as the app is installed. You can delete any individual reminder or saved place inside the app at any time.

Uninstalling Whenly deletes everything it holds, including all reminders, saved places and history. Because there is no server, there is no copy anywhere else and nothing to request, export or erase from us — and equally, nothing to restore. Clearing the app's storage from Android Settings has the same effect.

Android's own backup system may include app data in a device backup if you have that enabled. That backup is between you and your Android device provider; Whenly neither creates nor reads it.

Children

Whenly is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, of any age. Since no data is collected or transmitted to us, there is nothing held about any user to identify or remove.

Changes to this policy

If the app ever changes what leaves your device, this page will be updated and the date at the top changed before that version is released. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes on Google Play.
